Once upon a time, there I was a teenager eagerly waiting for my first passport full of anticipation for my first trip overseas which I have earned as the first place on an art award.
Years passed and since then I have lived in different parts of the world. I carry a bit of Brazil, Portugal, Japan and New Zealand in my heart and I've been calling Auckland home since 2001. Influences from those places I lived, people and cultures are continuously shaping my identity and ultimately inform my work.
Becoming an artist was not a straightforward path. I did not imagine it as a career. Instead, I became an architect and urbanist, and I even completed a Master degree and taught architectural design papers at the University of Auckland and had a long artistic hiatus in my life. But something was missing.
Little I knew that all the experiences I was living, while not making art, have been a valuable asset to my journey and helped create my library of emotions to be later expressed through my art. Equally, the spatial understanding, the materiality and architectural aesthetics are present in my work.
Now, I now work on a symbiosis, often with my hands directly onto the canvas, as a bridge to my heart, allowing for my emotion to spontaneously flow with a minimum interference.
I have a deep appreciation for minimalist aesthetics that continue to inspire me. It can be observed by a predominance of minimalist palettes in monochromatic compositions with tonal variety or contrasting warm colours palette. I am also interested in the relationship between the artwork, the viewer and the space.
In 2023 I had one of my works, “Inside Out Reverse”, exhibited at the Museum of Auckland. This work is part of a series of diptychs exploring the dichotomy of emotions inherent to the lives of citizens of the world and their hybrid hearts with multiple homes. In between the “ME” here and the “ME” elsewhere, there is a void occupied by my heart that merges, expands and flows between both worlds. Under the visible personas, there is a multitude of layers of concealed emotions and feelings that resist, exist, and coexist that are not detachable from our existences.
This year I am having a solo exhibition "Beyond Celebration" at Eyes on Fire Gallery [15 Great North Road, Grey Lynn] from 5 to 26 July 2024.
For 2025 I have an exciting project to be revealed during my exhibition.
Welcome to my art world.
