Dunedin piano teacher, Jane Trotter came to photography when looking for an alternative creative challenge to complement her busy teaching practice and music compositions. Short on time, and practical by nature, she decided to focus on creating photographs of the everyday items around her home. As a musician, Jane’s instinctive appreciation of form, balance, pattern, shape and structure lent itself perfectly to her experimental images and a love of abstracts quickly grew.

For Jane, photography is not so much about artistically recording what is there, but creating something new and different out of what exists already; to give new life to a subject, to alter and challenge the viewer’s perspective and to invite a sense of mystery, wonder and intrigue. She calls this her “Abstracted Reality”. Her use of colour, bold shapes and patterns, and strong, simple graphic design elements feature prominently and produce original artworks that are unmistakably a “Jane Trotter”.

The creativity and uniqueness of her photography has seen her in demand to judge national competitions, run workshops and deliver the keynote address at several photography conferences. Her work has featured in international magazines and her presentations “Abstracted Reality” and “The Art of Creating a Triptych” are regularly on the programmes of the world’s camera clubs and societies.
