I believe in the magical power of colours. How it can affect our senses & emotions not only physically but mentally. It has a healing power that works within the inhabited city and space we live in. As an Interior Designer, I love exploring diverse cities around the world, which reflects my passion for travelling. I love meeting new people with different cultures, and people with a variety of inhabiting environments. I love learning new languages, their history and their lifestyle. I love listening to their stories and getting to know their style of life and fashion.
"Architecture of Wearables" is a project that I worked on to develop my interest and passion in colours, how colours act in space and mainly how they affect human senses and emotions, not only physically but mentally, based on my university studies in Spatial Design at AUT. Its playful colour palette and compositions of shapes are inspired by changes in colours of the sky from dawn to morning, noon to afternoon, and evening to night. Geometric shapes are the expression of how I see architecture and the people living within it.
I am an Interior Designer who always had a passion for colours, fashion and the identity of each individual. We all exist in space and there is a connection between our being in space and architecture. I believe colour and objects play a huge role in creating interaction in-between. My art portrays and supports the unique identities of people in this world, and different cultural and life backgrounds which are expressed through extravagant combinations of shapes, patterns, fashion objects and colours.
I moved to New Zealand on my own when I was 17. My family moved to New Zealand to live as my parents wanted us to have experience and learn English. I was 9 at that time. After 2 years, my parents were homesick therefore we decided to move back to Korea. Since then, I have always wanted to come back to New Zealand. I loved the freedom and peaceful lifestyle of living with nature, which I could never experience where I come from, the big and busy city of Seoul. I struggled to adapt back to competitive school environments. I wasn't myself. Time went by, and my parents finally decided to send me to study overseas, back to New Zealand. I knew what I wanted and I knew here was the place I would pursue my dreams and passion in the creativity that was living inside me eager to come out and fly. It was the best move that I have made which I never regret. I started to find myself as a young artist and started to explore and express my passion for creativity.
In my second year at university, I was able to participate in the Venice Architecture Biennale Exhibition in collaboration with AUT and Sydney University. Our team have won the Best Design Gold Awards in the Spatial Student category.
In my final year at university, I won the Resene Colour Awards Rising Star (first place) Student category. I would probably say that this was the motivation that allowed me to keep on exploring and developing my project "Architecture of Wearables". And until now, I am honoured to be working as a Resene Colour Consultant on the weekends, helping customers with their colour selections. I feel satisfied and happy when customers value my help and consultations. I love that I can help people with colours and also understand their needs and colour preferences.
I am currently working as an Interior Designer in a Commercial workplace sector. I love to create a workplace environment that makes people want to come to work. Space that not only makes them feel like a place where they only come for work but to relax and interact with the team, and the people, a space that creates a balance of work, fun and life. I believe colour plays a huge role in creating the atmosphere of each functionality of space.
Artworks are also momentum objects that allow space to breathe and create interaction and creativity. Think about the experience of going to an Art Gallery or Photo Exhibition. When you stop for a moment in front of an art, look at it, gaze at it, do you feel how it takes you to another space in your mind and imagination? Does it make you remember things? brings back your memory? But you are still here. Isn't that amazing? Even though for a short moment, that power of art that plays a role within space which takes you through another level of experience is quite mesmerising.
